Archived Artist of the Month Pages
12/08

Every month, in no particular order, this page will highlight one of the many artists who has contributed to the production and success of House of Chai productions. I’d love to include a page of links to all of the artists I admire, or even to just the ones I know and respect. But if I did, it would require a webpage that would scroll as much as the Torah!

House of Chai - Featured artist of the month
November 2008 -
Wayne Lo

Me and Wayne. Wayne's Bachelor Party, 2005.

This Artist of the Month page is dedicated to the great Wayne Lo. I had the fortune of studying with Wayne in college, and working together on such powerful student projects as Oh Noah, Justin’s Revenge, and the live action classic Pencil Test of Legend. Wayne was a superstar then and is still shining brightly today.

Hopping and Hacking from BATTLE MiLK volume 1

I’m a great admirer of Wayne for a number of reasons. He can do anything; animation, drawing, painting. But the aspect I love most is his passion. Not just for artwork, but for everything he does. Whether it’s shooting acting reference, reenacting scenes from films, or doing shirtless kung fu moves in the streets on a rainy night in San Francisco, you can always count on Wayne for emotionally packed content.

Wayne’s the guy making sound effects when he draws. He’s the one you can count on to roll into the room on an office chair in a flying position if the Superman theme is playing, or to bound in barefoot leaping from table to table if he hears the score to Disney’s Tarzan. Wayne gets into it and intimate with everything he does.

And he’s been getting into a lot. He’s worked for The Orphanage, Attik, Industrial Light & Magic, and FACTOR 5, on projects such as Men in Black II, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Peter Pan, Van Helsing, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Flags of Our Fathers, and LAIR. He’s currently working as a Concept Designer at Lucas Film Animation on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Wayne’s contribution to to the Totoro Forest Project

Also recently, Wayne’s done work for the Totoro Forest Project. And along with his fellow concept artists Killian Plunkett, Thang Le, and Jackson Sze, put out a great collection of artwork called BATTLEMiLK. His bio from their book sums up his history the best:

I was born on the East Coast, raised inCalifornia, nurtured in Berkeley, rewired in Beijing, rebooted in Taiwan, shrunkenhead-ed at San Jose State, discombobulated on Kerner Blvd and jury rigged into a concept artist. There I cursed pirates, skinned werewolves, skewered vampires, thawed Neverland and got cluster-f*@ked on Iwo Jima. After about 6 years with the ILM art department I moved on to art direct Factor 5’s PS3 title Lair and have been creating artwork for Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I’m now a proud papa, exhausted, blessed and amazed at every turn!

Little Saigon the World Over from BATTLE MiLK volume 1

It’s for these reasons the House of Chai holds its chopsticks high in honor of Wayne Lo for the month of November! Thanks Wayne!
